The border bill is dying

Logan Roy testifies before Congress stability.ai

It is beginning to look that the bipartisan Border/Ukraine/Israel is no longer dead on arrival in the House. Because it will never leave the Senate. Calling the GOP a chickenshit outfit is an insult to fowl everywhere.

The proposed bill is what legislation is supposed to look like. It's detailed, it provides for Congressional oversight, it requires reports on a broad range of implementation results and it provides the money and authorizations to vary regular procedures to do it. The substantive provisions land between the hyper-extremes of kill them all and send limos, grant citizenship and passports on arrival and put $250,000 in their pockets to get them started living the American Dream. (So far as I know that isn't actually being proposed anywhere.) Goes too far? Not far enough? In the Goldilocks zone?

We'll never hear the public debate, which is a shame. But some problems are just too lovable to solve.

Refining polling models. It's the received wisdom of the ages—don't rely on events that haven't happened yet. On the other hand, don't bring a knife to a gunfight, either.
